Crossrail – Environmental Statement

Planning, co-ordination and delivery of one of the most comprehensive Bill and Environmental Statement submissions in UK history.

Co-ordinating vast input

We knew that this was going to be big, but just how big still came as a shock. The scale of the Crossrail project is such that the assessment of its environmental impact has involved hundreds of specialist consultants. From light pollution to traffic noise, spoil quantities and routes away from construction sites, ornithologists, zoologists, the list goes on.

Planning is everything

ERM, the world's leading environmental consultancy, was responsible for the technical input and ensuring the contributions from their vast network of specialists came in on time. We had to devote enormous resources to planning how the content could be received, version controlled, signed off and actually put into production. The thoroughness of our planning procedures has lead to project design methodology that is unique in the major projects field.

Covering all eventualities

The submission deadline for Parliament was fixed and immovable. Missing the deadline would have meant Crossrail missing its slot in parliament, potentially jeopardising the whole £10 billion project. As a contingency we put a comprehensive disaster recovery plan in place. It would have enabled us to relocate within hours and provide complete project continuity.

Adding unquestionable value

To streamline the production process we designed branded templates for each of the anticipated volumes. This encouraged all contributors to maintain the high brand values of Crossrail. We also built a secure extranet that enabled contributors to upload content, control versioned documents and aid the sign-off procedure. It's since been said that without this innovation, the submission would not have happened on time.

Going into action

We configured a dedicated team to manage the massive content as it arrived and modified our workspace to accommodate up to 20 individuals from the client and delivery teams. Working round the clock for several weeks we packed off the final documents on time and glitch free. The final Environmental Statement, Plans and Elevations, Non Technical Summary and supporting information totalled over 14,000 printed pages. Against all the odds it was delivered on time and is now making its way through Select Committee in Parliament.
