Crossrail - Consulting Londoners

Enlightened developers know that effective consultation is key to getting projects off the ground

Groundswell of support

Getting support for a project the size of Crossrail has been a mammoth task in itself. The consultation process has been hailed as a benchmark for major projects and has gained unprecedented support.

Listening intently

Crossrail is Europe's largest engineering project. It will see rapid, long trains connect Heathrow to the East of England via tunnels running deep under central London. It will pass under and through historic areas and communities that people are rightly sensitive about.

Engaging stakeholders

It's no secret that a successful consultation process needs to be as comprehensive as possible. The more people that can be engaged early on, the better the outcome for all. We advised that consultation needn't be dry and formulaic. If a proposal is imaginative, the consultation should go out to stakeholders in an imaginative way.

Maximising media effectiveness

We helped Crossrail conduct several rounds of consultation using the widest possible menu of media to reach the widest number of people. Print, online, DM, press, PR, environmental, exhibitions and field marketing were all utilised within a tight but inventive brand vision. A high response rate and data capture that sets new standards, point to overwhelming media effectiveness.

Passage through parliament

The consultation informs decisions made about the proposal which, in turn, is enshrined within a Bill submission to Parliament. It is they who will finally determine the fate of this brave and bold step for London. Due to be announced late in 2006, early signs are that the Bill is enjoying a smooth ride through the Commons - largely due, we are told, to the thoroughness of the consultation.

"UXB's work has set us apart and way above the norm and been pivotal in achieving our objectives in creating understanding and acceptance of the scheme. The innovative design and concepts support all our requirements admirably. We have a suite of images and documents that map out our agenda in a clear and informative way, but in a format that is fresh and exciting"
